I haven't heard any of the European public domain releases, and don't see any need to, really - I can't see how they would have better sources than Columbia/CBS. Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs is the fifth studio album by Marty Robbins, released on the Columbia Records label in September 1959 and peaking at 6 on the U.S. I think the 1996 European twofer is a bit smiley-EQed, and it has the left and right channels flipped - however there are worse things that could have be done.
This issue also includes some bonus tracks: The Hanging Tree, Saddle Tramp (which was the B-side of Big Iron and is entirely in keeping with the rest of the album), and the only "absolutely essential in mono" track, El Paso, which has an extra 4 lines of lyrics in mono.Īs much as I like the mono mix, I can't recommend the Australian mono CD as I think it's been played around with too much, with decays and reverb tails being compromised.
